A collection of nine 5 in. x 7 in. unique cyanotype photograms with gold leaf. Each is in direct reference to one of the nine major approved apparitions of the Virgin Mary in the Catholic church. An apparition is a reported supernatural appearance of the Virgin Mary in a particular time and place. Both the lily and the color blue are historical symbols of the Virgin Mary. Like an apparition, a photogram seems to become visible without the interference of human manipulation. In making these photograms, I am examining the relationship between assumed objectivity in photography and the meaning and nature of appearance in relation to religious visions and apparitions. In doing so, I examine my skepticism and desire for belief, and reflect on the use of my hand to overlay these images with meaning.
